Surgery | Thoracic surgery

The Center for Thoracic Surgery deals with the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the lungs, pleura, trachea and bronchi, chest wall, mediastinum and diaphragm. In addition to classic surgeries, Bel Medic has also minimally invasive procedures, more specifically VATS methods, which are both diagnostic and therapeutic. Within the Center for Thoracic Surgery, special attention is paid to oncological patients, since the lungs are very often the place where malignant tumors occur primarily or in the form of metastases.

Invasive diagnostic and diagnostic-therapeutic procedures:

  • Surgical biopsy of the peripheral lymph nodes in the neck, in the armpit and in the chest wall
  • Surgical-operative biopsy of changes in the mediastinum region (mediastinoscopy and parasternal mediastinotomy)
  • Surgical method of open biopsy of the lungs, pleura, mediastinum and diaphragm
  • Pleural puncture (thoracocentesis)
  • Thoracic drainage (trocar drainage, surgical thoracostomy, open drainage)
  • Removal of foreign bodies from the trachea and bronchus under general anesthesia
  • Laser photocoagulation of endobronchial and endotracheal changes

Minimally invasive diagnostic and diagnostic-therapeutic procedures:

Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) allows examination of structures and organs within the chest. The image of the inside of the chest is obtained using a thoracoscope, a special surgical instrument with a light source and a video camera at the top. This instrument is inserted into the chest through incisions of only a few millimeters in the intercostal space.

What is the VATS method all about?

  • Thoracoscopy and pleuroscopy
  • Biopsy of the lungs or pleura
  • Removal of cancer and benign tumors of the lungs and pleura
  • Removal of excess fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion)
  • Surgical treatment of pneumothorax
  • Surgical treatment of excessive sweating (VATS sympathectomy)
  • Thymus removal in patients with myasthenia gravis (VATS thymectomy)
  • Treatment of pneumothorax by VATS method
  • Surgical treatment of chest deformities
  • Emergency management of bleeding from the lungs

Benefits of VATS surgery

  • MILLIMETER CUTTING
  • LESS POSTOPERATIVE PAIN
  • SHORT STAY IN THE HOSPITAL
  • FAST RECOVERY
  • ALMOST INVISIBLE SCARS
